Chapter 13 Dr. Hugo
Chapter 13 Dr. Hugo
Selena blew away the gunpowder smoke and then leaned against the wall to strike a pose.
Having survived the ordeal, Qin Wei was so excited he almost cried. If it weren't for his gender, he would have loved to pounce on the catwoman and give her a good kiss on the cheek.
Selena leaped into the well and used her gun to force back two cyborgs. These monsters were, after all, humans who had been transformed, and their genes still carried the fear of firearms. They retreated while growling and threatening.
"Are you alright?" Selena asked with concern.
"Thanks to you... I have strong bones and muscles and am in great shape."
Qin Wei was putting on a show of bravado.
The cyborg had an extremely strong grip; that grab just now broke several of his ribs, and now even breathing caused him a sharp pain in his chest.
However, Brock's condition was even worse; he was nearly unconscious and was helped by Gordon to rejoin the others.
"You...are still alive...that's good..."
Brock slightly raised his eyelids, and as soon as he opened his mouth, blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
"Thank you, Mr. Harvey Block. You are a great police officer, just like Mr. James Gordon!"
Qin Wei nodded and thanked her solemnly. Although it was Selena who saved him, he had also witnessed Brock being knocked down by the cyborg while trying to save him.
"How did you get back? Did you find a way out?" Qin Wei asked.
Catwoman shook her head; she had simply returned to offer assistance.
Remember Selena's earlier conjecture? She believed that the enemy had gone to great lengths to drive everyone to the bottom of the sewers because a bigger conspiracy was hidden there.
The water outlet is located at the very bottom of the sewer.
After parting ways with the group, Selena felt increasingly uneasy. Remembering that she had just disarmed Gordon, she feared for their safety and turned back.
It now appears that Selena's conjecture was entirely correct. These cyborgs were kept in the bottom of the sewers, and Dr. Hugo forced them there to use the cyborgs to kill them and silence them.
Once they are dead, Hugo's hiding place will remain a secret forever.
While the immediate crisis has been resolved, the real problems remain.
How can we escape from here?
"Why did you need handcuffs just now?" Gordon asked Qin Wei.
"The filter can't be destroyed by human hands alone, but a cyborg might be able to. I originally planned to cuff one end of the handcuffs to the iron mesh and the other end to the cyborg's toes, using that as leverage to break the filter... but I was being too naive!"
Qin Wei briefly explained his thoughts.
Looking back now, this quick-thinking idea seems quite illogical. For example, how could he persuade a cyborg to obediently put handcuffs on a monster given its volatile temper and strong aggressive tendencies?
Sacrifice yourself or sing a lullaby?
But Selena thought "leveraging resources" was a good idea.
"A slight improvement to the plan might not be a bad idea."
Just as everyone was talking at once, the work lights embedded in the well wall suddenly lit up one by one from top to bottom.
The group had long since adapted to the darkness, and the sudden burst of light made them squint. After finally adjusting to the light, they rubbed their eyes and noticed a small, thin figure that had appeared on the platform on the third floor of the well.
This was a bald man, about fifty years old, with a sleazy goatee, hands in his pockets, smiling at the crowd.
He was really short; the white lab coat he wore looked like a floor-length dress on him.
Needless to say, the person who came was none other than the big boss, Hugo Strange.
Qin Wei rubbed his forehead and sighed.
He knew it was time for the villains in the comics to spout their usual nonsense again. These guys could have just stayed hidden in the shadows, or kept quiet, but they still patiently answered the protagonist's questions.
But he wasn't Batman. He didn't care about Hugo Strange's motives, nor would he condemn him for being inhuman just because he committed a bloody crime. He just wanted his money back, to redeem Oswald, and to save his own life.
As for Selena, she didn't care at all; the villain had barely appeared when she fired three shots in a row.
However, the height difference between the two sides was too great, causing the bullets to deviate significantly.
Gordon pressed the trigger, signaling to the girl to conserve their limited ammunition.
"Welcome to my testing ground. Are you all satisfied with my masterpieces?" Dr. Hugo spread his arms and looked down at the crowd with a disdainful air.
"Masterpiece, you mean those two little mice that became docile as soon as they ran into the gun?"
Selena toyed with a revolver with one hand on her hip, a pose that perfectly accentuated her graceful figure. It was a pity she was still wearing a mask, otherwise her disdainful sneer would have been even more captivating than her figure.
"Fear is a biological instinct."
Dr. Hugo was not provoked by Selena. With a warm smile on his face, he explained slowly and methodically.
"Without reverence for danger, living things will self-destruct, and when death becomes the main theme, reproduction loses its meaning."
Selena pursed her lips, trying to understand the doctor's obscure and difficult-to-understand remarks.
"But your cyborgs don't seem to need to reproduce!"
Qin Wei then picked up the conversation at the opportune moment.
Upon seeing this face, the doctor's brow twitched. He seemed to want to control his expression, but the upward curve of his lips was impossible to suppress.
In Qin Wei's eyes, his expression became extremely strange, and it was this strange expression that made Qin Wei more certain of his guess.
You know me!
"Yes, I've seen this face before, more than once. You could even say I've been searching for the owner of this face all along. But unfortunately, I don't know your name. After all, I'm not very curious about mundane matters, which is why my clients feel comfortable doing business with me."
Although the words contained very little information, Qin Wei still managed to glean some important details from them.
The doctor mentioned "clients," which means that the body he occupied may have been the doctor's client.
The doctor also said that everyone was looking for him, so he must be very important to the doctor. Perhaps through this relationship, Qin Wei could find a way to survive for everyone.
But the doctor's actions soon shattered his illusions.
Hugo Strange pulled a remote control out of his pocket.
"You're right, cyborgs don't need fear, so I'll sever all their emotions. In the next ten minutes, they'll become ruthless killing machines."
"Wait, you just said you've been looking for me for a long time, but what if I die..."
Qin Wei wanted to make one last attempt, but the doctor didn't give him any chance to argue.
"What's useful is your body; as for life and death, I don't care."
He pressed the switch, and amidst the cyborg's hysterical screams, the doctor disappeared into the darkness without looking back.
Fortunately, the doctor forgot to turn off the lights when he left, allowing Qin Wei and his group to finally fight in bright light. But even with enhanced vision, could they really escape from the two berserk cyborgs?
The changes in the cyborgs are visible to the naked eye. Previously, their faces would often show expressions of confusion, anger, or fear, but now only a numb face remains.
The two cyborgs had their mouths slightly open, and large clumps of saliva overflowed from their lower lips like a waterfall, splashing onto the ground with a pattering sound.
Selena, refusing to believe it, fired two shots at the android closest to her.
Boom!
The eyeballs exploded, and the gushing blood added a grotesque touch to the cyborg's numb and ugly face.
There were no groans or howls, no angry roars, only the most basic reactions to external stimuli, such as gunshots. Upon hearing the gunshots, the two cyborgs moved, their forelimbs touching the ground as they ground towards the group.
