Chapter 27: My Suggestion
Chapter 27: My Suggestion
"Last night's lizardman attack has come to an end. Dr. Dara Irrfan, the mastermind behind this terrorist attack, has been arrested. The Osborn Corporation claims that his actions are unrelated to the company, and they urge the public not to focus their attention on..."
In the early morning, bright sunlight streamed into the house, and the sound of news broadcasts from the television drifted from the living room into the kitchen.
The elderly man, having finished preparing breakfast, shouted at the top of his lungs, "P, it's breakfast time!"
A moment later, a youthful voice responded.
"I'm coming!"
Aunt Mei carried three plates out of the kitchen and placed them on the dining table in the living room.
She had just finished placing it when she heard a series of footsteps as people came downstairs.
The next second, someone gave her a small kiss on the cheek.
Good morning, Mei. Cool, still my favorite cheese and ham sandwich.
Good morning, child.
Peter had barely sat down when he grabbed a sandwich from his plate and started eating. He was starving, probably because he had recovered from losing a dozen or so bones overnight, and he desperately needed to absorb more external energy.
But as soon as Peter put the sandwich in his mouth, he felt something was wrong.
When did sandwiches become so dry?
Looking down, he realized that the sandwich he was holding had turned into two thick slices of bread, and the cheese and ham slices inside had somehow flown into Oz's mouth.
Why did you steal my breakfast?!
"Rob me? Didn't I save you two slices of bread?"
Peter was so angry he felt dizzy. He really wanted to snatch the Italian meat pie from Oz's plate, but then he thought about how delicious it was and finally gave up the idea.
As Peter munched on his dry, tasteless bread, he heard Aunt May's voice in his ear.
"You like this crow even more than I thought; you're even willing to eat bread dry."
"Actually, I don't like him at all!"
Peter said angrily, then noticed the image being played on the television.
It was Officer George Stacy's speech.
"I have to admit a mistake, which was yesterday's warrant for Spider-Man's arrest. Without his heroic performance last night, we wouldn't have been able to capture that giant lizard so easily..."
Peter was secretly pleased to hear that the police had lifted the warrant for his arrest and no longer held the same hostile attitude towards him.
This made the bread slices in my hand not taste so bad.
Aunt Mei noticed her nephew's gaze, and upon seeing the speaker on the screen, she asked curiously:
"So how was dinner at their house last night?"
"Fantastic, lemon sea bass...it's delicious!"
In fact, Peter then realized that his lemon bass had been eaten by Oz before he could even take a few bites!
"No, I certainly wasn't referring to the taste of the fish," Aunt May said, raising an eyebrow.
"Well... I get along very well with Gwen, she's a wonderful girl." Peter said somewhat shyly.
"Maybe you can invite her to our house for dinner next time," Aunt Mei said.
"I will," Peter nodded sheepishly, then asked, "Aren't you concerned that Spider-Man defeated the Lizard?"
Upon hearing this, Aunt May simply raised an eyebrow and poured the remaining cereal from her bowl into Oz's bowl.
The crow was munching on the last slice of ham when it suddenly noticed a pile of garbage in its bowl. It looked up at her in disbelief, as if to say, "What do you mean?!"
Aunt May, of course, didn't notice Oz's odd behavior. She got up and went to the kitchen, saying as she did so:
"He's a good person."
"That's it?" Peter pressed.
"Uh... a kind guy?" Aunt May didn't quite understand what her nephew meant, but she still replied.
Peter yelled at the figure disappearing into the kitchen, "I mean, he beat the lizardman! That terrifying-looking giant lizard monster!"
"Well, weren't those two sentences I just said praising him?" Aunt Mei retorted.
Oz couldn't stand it anymore and slapped Peter on the head, which was showing signs of excitement.
"Don't ask anymore."
"Why?" Peter asked, rubbing the back of his head in confusion.
Oz pointed to a stack of white papers that was well hidden in the living room.
Peter squinted, located the spot where the white paper was, and was about to get up when he noticed that Aunt May had already come out.
She stepped forward and kissed herself on the cheek. "I'm going to work now. Remember not to be late."
After saying that, she slung her small bag over her shoulder and left, leaving Peter with only her back to him.
After Aunt May left, Peter immediately went to the spot where the white paper was and pulled it out.
The rent payable next month is listed above.
514.7 dollars.
From a rent perspective, this amount of money is not expensive, considering that Parker's house has a three-bedroom, one-living room layout, as well as a basement and a lawn.
From any perspective, this is a reasonable rental price.
but......
But with one less person earning money in the family, the burden falls on the other person.
She not only had to take care of everything at home, but also had to bear the cost of her nephew's schooling.
This might be a little difficult for one person.
Peter, clutching the bill, asked, puzzled, "Why did Aunt May hide it?"
"If I don't hide it, am I supposed to put it in your room so you'll drop out of school and go to work?" Oz said.
"You know these things?"
"I already knew that."
In fact, on many nights after Peter chose to become Spider-Man, Oz was often the subject of the old man's tales, describing his recent troubles.
The old woman wouldn't talk to her nephew about such trivial matters. In her opinion, the most important thing was for him to study hard, since Peter was so smart.
Besides, she couldn't possibly tell him; doing so would only add to Parker's stress and make him overthink.
"Good heavens, I didn't know... I just asked her what she thought about Spider-Man defeating the Lizard, which is far more important than me defeating Dara!"
"I need to go apologize to Mei!"
Peter then began the classic self-blame segment.
Oz flapped his wings and flew to Peter's shoulder, whispering in his ear:
"I have a plan."
"What?"
"You definitely want to ease Mei's burden, but blindly looking for a job will only affect your studies and Spider-Man time, which won't help her."
"So what do you mean?" Peter's youthful face was very serious, wanting to know what methods he could use to help the old man.
"This job allows you to be Spider-Man while doing other things without affecting your life at all; it's even a flexible job!"
"Stop keeping me in suspense!" Peter said impatiently.
Oz remained cryptic: "Think about it, these days jobs are hard to find. Either there are few hours or the pay is low, and those with high pay don't even look at you. And if you finally find a salary that meets your expectations, the working hours are too long. Sigh, capitalism."
Peter remained expressionless, forcing himself not to brush away the wings that were stroking his head, as if he were some kind of pet owned by Oz!
"You'd better come up with a good idea, or I swear, you'll never stand on my shoulders again!"
Oz coughed to clear his throat, retracted the wing from Parker's head, and said seriously.
"Listen carefully, this job is..."
Peter pricked up his ears, making sure he didn't miss a single word.
"Go become a welfare worker."
"???"
