Chapter 53 Being Pragmatic
Chapter 53 Being Pragmatic
Lin Chong knocked on the door and went in.
He looked at the two police officers sitting on the side of the backrest and said politely, "Hello, I am Lin Xiaoxi's brother."
He was about to ask about the situation when Officer Liu spoke first.
"You're the guardian, right? Perfect timing. Let's discuss this with your sister. She hit someone, and the other person went to the hospital for a medical examination. The injury report says it's minor, and they're demanding compensation from you for medical expenses and emotional distress, totaling 12,000 yuan."
Officer Liu tapped the table with his pen, not intending to let Lin Chong understand the situation, but instead directly gave him a "solution".
Lin Chong frowned, immediately sensing something was wrong, but he remained calm and followed Officer Liu's words, saying, "Then please show me the injury assessment report."
Lin Chong took the report from the other party and flipped through it page by page, not missing a single word. Only after he finished reading it and closed the report did he look up at Officer Liu and ask.
"The report not only shows impact injuries but also penetrating wounds. Did my sister stab someone with a knife?"
At that moment, Xiaoxi hurriedly shouted, "Brother! I didn't! It was Sister Yun's spirit that caused this, to protect me!"
Lin Chong's eyelids twitched. He walked past the two policemen to Xiaoxi. He gently touched the scratch on Xiaoxi's forehead and, after confirming that Xiaoxi had no other wounds, asked, "Does it hurt?" before asking, "Did you hit someone?"
Xiaoxi's lips were pressed into a thin line, her eyes red-rimmed, and she whispered, "I did fight, but that man attacked first. I was trying to help Sister Yun, and she used her spirit to fight back to help me..."
Lin Chong listened patiently, but when he turned to face the two officers again, his expression had changed.
He suddenly realized that things weren't as simple as they seemed.
Lin Chong looked at the two police officers who were sitting casually and seemed fearless, and slowly spoke.
"Excuse me, why should my sister compensate for the injuries caused by the fairy? She doesn't even have a fairy."
The two officers exchanged a glance. Officer Liu shrugged and spread his hands, saying, "We've already confirmed it. Your sister also hit someone; she was the one who started it."
"Why is what you said different from what my sister said?" Lin Chong asked expressionlessly. "Could you please show me the security camera footage from the restaurant entrance?"
Upon hearing this, Officer Liu took the notebook from his colleague, casually turned a page, and said in a nonchalant tone, "Unfortunately, the surveillance cameras are broken. The cameras on that street are under repair these past few days."
Lin Chong looked at him, and after two seconds asked, "Which surveillance camera is broken?"
"The whole street."
"Is the one at the restaurant entrance broken too?"
"I told you, all the cameras on the street are under repair, don't you understand?" Officer Liu raised his voice impatiently, looking at Lin Chong and glaring at him menacingly.
But Lin Chong wasn't afraid of him. Instead, he took the initiative to walk over, placed his hands on the table, leaned slightly forward, stared into Officer Liu's eyes, and spoke slowly and deliberately.
"Listen, my sister is sixteen years old, and the other party is an adult male. The story you gave me is completely different from what my sister says. Now you're telling me the surveillance cameras at the scene just happened to be broken?"
"Officer, please don't treat me like a fool."
With a loud bang!
Officer Liu suddenly stood up, the chair legs dragging on the ground with a noise. He looked at the boy in front of him, who had a delicate face and still looked like a student. He appeared dignified, but inwardly he felt that this kid was much more troublesome than he had thought!
He sneered, "Young man, are you questioning the veracity of the police investigation?"
Lin Chong remained unmoved and repeated, "Show me the surveillance footage, now."
"Heh..." Officer Liu stood behind the table, sizing up Lin Chong. "You think you can just look at him like that? Are you a lawyer? Or a city leader? A kid running around the police station pointing fingers—"
He slammed his pen on the table, glaring at Lin Chong: "Who do you think you are? Don't you even know where you are?"
There was a moment of silence in the interrogation room.
Another police officer stood up and blocked the two of them, seemingly trying to mediate. Xiaoxi ran behind Lin Chong and tugged at his clothes with some concern.
However, to their surprise, Lin Chong was not angry but pleased in the face of Officer Liu's insults. He even seemed to relax and let out a long breath.
He looked at Officer Liu, his tone suddenly becoming relaxed.
"Judging from your attitude, it's obvious you're afraid to show me the security footage?"
Ignoring Officer Liu's increasingly grim expression, he turned around, patted Xiaoxi's head, and sighed.
"That's great. Before we came, I was really worried that you might have hit someone in a moment of impulse, and that I, as your older brother, would have failed in my duty. Now that things are as they are, I can rest assured."
"elder brother..."
Xiaoxi clutched Lin Chong's sleeve, tears welling in her eyes. Just as she was about to say something, she saw Lin Chong put a finger to his lips and make a "shh" gesture towards her.
Lin Chong smiled and said softly, "It's okay, I'll handle it."
He turned and stared into Officer Liu's eyes, his smile gradually fading, his tone becoming frighteningly flat, as if he were mechanically reciting aloud.
"Federal law clearly stipulates that surveillance footage of street fights must be kept for a specified period of time, and if repairs are needed, the relevant records must be reported in advance."
"Please show me the filing form now. If there is neither a record nor a filing form, I will include this in the formal complaint and send a copy to the Municipal Bureau's Discipline Inspection Team."
Upon hearing this, Officer Liu's expression changed abruptly, and his colleagues beside him also showed signs of panic.
Regarding this case, both of them knew the actual situation. If Lin Chong really caused trouble for the disciplinary inspection team, others might be unpredictable, but the two of them would definitely be in deep trouble!
Officer Liu was a pragmatic man. When he realized that the boy in front of him was not an easily fooled naive student, he instantly changed his expression and put on a gentle smile.
"Haha, young man, you've misunderstood. This reporting form, actually..."
He was about to speak when he heard the sound of leather shoes stomping on the floor from the end of the corridor.
A middle-aged man dressed in casual clothes, with a briefcase tucked under his arm, turned the corner.
He was slightly overweight, his hair was neatly combed, and his face had a rosy glow that only someone who sits in an office all year round would have.
Officer Liu saw him through the small window, and his expression immediately changed. His previous fawning and panicked demeanor instantly transformed into a confident composure.
He glanced at Lin Chong with a hint of smugness, then opened the door to the interrogation room and went out to greet him.
"Director Dong, what brings you here?"
Outside the door, Officer Liu was bent over, his face full of a fawning smile. When Director Dong's gaze swept over, he also secretly winked at someone behind him.
Director Dong immediately understood and calmly said, "I heard your commotion from quite a distance, so I came to check it out..."
His gaze swept over Lin Chong and Xiao Xi twice before finally settling on Lin Chong. He asked in a declarative tone.
"You are Lin Xiaoxi's family member."
"It's me." Lin Chong squinted at him, waiting for him to continue.
Director Dong nodded, took a document out of his briefcase, pretended to look at it for a few minutes, then looked up and said.
"I've looked into your sister's situation. She started it. The security cameras are indeed under repair, but there are witnesses at the restaurant. If you insist on going through the proper channels to file a complaint with the Municipal Public Security Bureau's Discipline Inspection Team... we welcome that."
He glanced at Lin Chong casually, a mocking smile playing on his lips.
"But I need to remind you, they have a lot of business over there, and it's uncertain when they'll even see your complaint..."
