Chapter 82 Light Will Illuminate the Truth
Chapter 82 Light Will Illuminate the Truth
"Loft, is that right? I'm Karen Dantès."
Upon hearing Suren's voice, Loft stood up and extended his right hand, looking Suren up and down with curiosity as he said with a smile, "Hello, Mr. Dantès."
After shaking hands, Loft exchanged a few pleasantries with Suren and then led Suren directly to the hotel's backyard.
Several tall trees are planted here, and tulips are planted around the yard and at the entrance. Several benches are placed near the flower bushes.
It's worth noting that there were several shooting targets here, disrupting the tranquil atmosphere of the backyard, and several men in vests were practicing shooting here.
Seemingly noticing Suren's surprised gaze, Loft smiled and explained, "My master has also booked this backyard."
Suren nodded slightly and then fell silent, following Loft forward.
"I'm so sorry, sir. It's not that I don't trust you, but for the master's safety, you may need to cooperate with some necessary tests," Loft said apologetically. After all, he was dealing with an "Awakened One," and he had to be cautious.
Suren didn't say anything, only nodded slightly. Seeing that Suren had no objections, Loft breathed a sigh of relief. He looked at Suren and asked, "If I may ask, do you prefer guns or other weapons?"
"I prefer using a gun." With that, "Eye of Destruction" appeared out of thin air and was held in Suren's right hand. With a thought, all the bullets inside the gun were replaced with ordinary silver bullets.
This is the latest usage he has mastered. The drawback of this usage is that it is very mentally taxing, as it requires replacing parts without being able to see the internal structure. Fortunately, after his promotion, Suren's computing power reached an astonishing level, which enabled him to use it in this way.
At that moment, Loft only felt a blur before his eyes, and the man in front of him already had a silver-white gun in his hand. Before he could even speak, Suren had already taken a position and fired.
Three gunshots rang out, and Loft involuntarily turned his head. When he saw what was going on, he was stunned. All three bullets hit the bullseye!
Keep in mind that the current distance is about fifty yards, or roughly 45 meters, which is already the maximum range of a revolver. To have this kind of marksmanship at this distance is already considered that of a sharpshooter.
As Charles's assistant, Loft was no stranger to the world; he had seen quite a few awakened individuals. However, the man's nonchalant attitude, his incredibly accurate marksmanship, and his bizarre ability to conjure firearms out of thin air still instilled a sense of awe in Loft.
Loft was about to speak when he noticed the man in front of him pressing his temples, frowning, and looking serious. Loft asked, somewhat puzzled, "Mr. Dantès, is something wrong?"
"It's nothing, I just didn't sleep well last night." Suren rubbed his temples; Ellie's whispers had popped into his head again. He glanced at Loft casually, pretending nothing was wrong. "Is there anything else that needs testing?"
"No need, sir, please follow me." Loft shook his head. The test was just a formality anyway. With the guarantee of the "Mist Exchange" and the strength the other party had demonstrated, there was no need to waste time. Frequent testing might even annoy the other party, which would be a loss.
Back in the hall, Loft and Suren sat on the sofa, in front of which was a long table. Loft took a contract from the inside pocket of his coat and handed it to Suren.
The document was similar in style to the one from the "Star Club." Suren took the yellowed paper. This time, Suren no longer felt suffocated by the paper. After his promotion, the constraints Suren faced became less and less. This contract was now practically meaningless to him.
The contract was brief, outlining the obligations of both parties. Suren only needed to escort Mr. Charles's caravan safely to "Libraton" to receive a reward of 1400 pounds. The materials produced during the mission would be distributed fairly between the two parties. In case of unforeseen circumstances, Mr. Charles Russell would also provide additional compensation.
Suren thought for a moment, then looked up from the documents and onto Loft, asking in a hoarse voice, "Is there a route map for this mission?"
"Yes, Mr. Dantes, please wait a moment." Loft said, standing up and walking towards his room.
A short while later, Loft returned to the sofa with a roll of paper in his hand. He spread the paper out on the table; it was a map of the Protected Continent, though not very complete, only roughly dividing the territory.
On the map, the continent of Sanctuary is divided by four different colored blocks, each representing one of the four major churches. The area of the Church of the Shield of Watch is very special. Apart from the "Providence Border" on the far right of the map, the remaining area forms a ring that encircles the continent of Sanctuary in the middle.
Suren knew that this was because the Church of the Shield of Watch was responsible for defending against demons from outside the continent, and the Providence Border was the region with the highest intensity of combat. Every year, the other three major churches would send a lot of people to the border.
On this map, a route is drawn in pen for the area of the Principality of Equilia, which belongs to the Libra Church. The route starts in the town of Loren and ends in Libraton, with a total length of about 200 kilometers. It would take about 7-10 days to reach the destination by ordinary horse-drawn carriage.
However, Suren also noticed that this route did not follow the road built by the church. Several paths went directly across the wilderness. Fortunately, those areas were low-risk areas, and the demons encountered were at most some scattered Level I evil spirits.
Suren pondered for a moment before asking, "How many extraordinary individuals are in the team in total?"
"Including you, there are three Awakened Ones, three senior Seekers, and two ordinary Seekers," Loft answered without hesitation. Then he smiled sheepishly. "Although I am also a superhuman, my abilities are more supportive, so I wasn't included in the count."
Suren nodded. The team's overall strength was quite formidable. Even if they encountered a "Dominator Demon," they could easily resolve the battle with the team's strength.
In this light, the 1400-pound bounty seems quite worthwhile. However, Suren estimates that the contract between the Seer and himself is different, probably only a few hundred pounds.
Without further hesitation, Suren picked up his pen and signed his name. He had no intention of using the [Information Shackles] to forge documents, after all, this was just a normal transaction contract, and Suren still had that much of a sense of contractual obligation.
"Well then, Mr. Dantes, meet at the eastern exit of town at 8 a.m. the day after tomorrow." Loft carefully put away the contract and map, and bowed. "You only need to prepare the supplies you need for the battle; you don't need to worry about the provisions for the journey."
Suren did not return the greeting, after all, he was not exactly a gentleman. He simply smiled and nodded, then turned and left the "Tulip Hotel".
Just as he stepped out of the hotel, Ellie's whispers echoed in his mind again, causing Suren to frown.
He took a deep breath, and after a while, he managed to banish the terrible emotions from his mind.
After much deliberation, Suren decided to perform the soul-binding ceremony tonight. After all, if things continued like this, he would eventually be consumed by the negative emotions contained in "Ellie's Tears".
Suren found a secluded spot to remove his disguise. While pondering the ritual, he wandered aimlessly through the streets and unknowingly arrived at the duty station.
Suren looked at the gate of the duty station and chuckled to himself. It seemed that he had indeed developed a habit of going to the duty station whenever he had nothing to do.
Suren then remembered that he still had about 10 contribution points left. Adhering to the spirit of "if you don't spend it, you might as well spend it", Suren decided to exchange them for enchanted bullets.
After a while, Suren put away the boxes of enchanted bullets he had just exchanged and was about to leave when he saw Karl coming down from the second floor.
He was frowning, as if he was thinking about something.
Suren strode up to Karl and patted him on the shoulder: "Why do you look so serious? What are you thinking about?"
"Surren, you said..." Carlton paused, his gaze falling on Surren's face. After a moment's hesitation, "Besides referring to illumination, what else could 'light' mean?"
"Why did you suddenly think of asking this?" Suren looked at Karl suspiciously. In Suren's memory, Karl had always been rather eccentric and rarely discussed such abstract issues.
Carl scratched his head and chuckled, "I've been having a lot of dreams lately, and in them someone keeps talking to me about 'light' and 'light'."
"Don't you emit light every time you use alchemy?" Suren shrugged, a slight smile playing on his lips. After all, dreaming was indeed more like Karl's style. "I think you've been spending too much time in the lab lately, that's why you're having these kinds of dreams."
Upon hearing Suren's words, Karl froze for a moment, then raised his voice, letting out an even louder laugh to cover up the brief unease. Fortunately, Suren had already turned around and didn't notice Karl's strange behavior.
After that, Carl declined Suren's suggestion to dine together and left under some pretext. Suren watched Carl's retreating figure and felt that Carl was acting strangely today.
Meanwhile, Karl was running wildly down the street, constantly muttering the word "Yuanzhi," completely unaware that a figure was secretly following him not far behind.
Soon, Karl arrived at his residence, locked the door from the inside, and eagerly took out the wooden box from under the bed, retrieving the book "An Overview of the Fundamentals of Materials Science".
He took the book to the desk without hesitation, and his palm emitted a pale blue light that quickly engulfed the book.
Surprisingly, the book, enveloped in a pale blue light, gradually vaporized, becoming thinner and thinner until only a yellowed sheet of paper remained.
Carl picked up the paper and found an address written on it: Harp Library, right brick wall, (6, 13).
Below the address, written in cursive script: "The truth of the world has been buried by lies, and truth—is the only knife that can give it new life."
