Chapter 286: Happy Time!
Chapter 286: Happy Time!
The royal dining hall gradually filled with warmth and life as Seraphina continued eating her way through the enormous breakfast spread laid before her.
All of her prior caution had disappeared minutes before, as now the small Merfolk Princess sat beside Jax with wide sparkling eyes, completely absorbed in the experience.
"...This one too?!"
She grabbed another pastry with obvious excitement before taking a bite. The moment she did, her entire expression lit up again.
Jax leaned back slightly in his chair, one arm resting against the armrest as he quietly sipped his tea while watching her.
Serika stood nearby with the faintest hint of amusement in her expression as she saw how cute Seraphina looked alongside the Demon King.
"She’s adapting quickly."
Jax glanced sideways.
"She was starving."
Serika nodded once.
"Still," she said softly.
"It’s nice seeing her smile after hearing about what happened," Serika said, and Jax’s gaze drifted back toward Seraphina again.
The little Princess was currently trying some kind of fruit-filled dessert while looking utterly fascinated by it.
"...This might be the best thing I’ve ever eaten." She said happily, and Jax noticed how relaxed Seraphina was now around him.
She had stopped glancing around nervously, and her eyes no longer carried that constant fear lingering beneath the surface.
Every few minutes, she unconsciously shifted a little closer toward him again. At some point, she ended up nearly pressed against his side while eating without even realizing it.
Not once did Jax comment on it. Eventually, Serika stepped forward carrying a small silver tray that was given to her by another maid just moments before.
"Princess Seraphina," she said warmly.
"I recommend trying this as well."
Seraphina looked toward the tray curiously.
Inside were delicate crystal cups filled with shimmering pale-blue cream layered with fruit and light mana-infused syrup.
"...Pretty..."
Serika smiled.
"It’s a palace specialty."
That was all the encouragement Seraphina needed. She carefully picked one up and one bite later, she was already devouring it eagerly, much to everyone’s amusement.
Serika looked immensely pleased with herself.
"I’ll inform the kitchen the recipe was successful."
Jax shook his head faintly, "You’re encouraging her."
Seraphina nodded rapidly in agreement while continuing to eat the dessert with absolute focus.
Time passed surprisingly quickly after that. The breakfast stretched on leisurely as Seraphina sampled almost everything on the table.
Seafood dishes especially seemed to catch her attention.
Jax noticed immediately.
"...Prefer ocean food?"
Seraphina blinked.
"...Is it obvious?"
"A little."
She looked down at the seafood platter in embarrassment.
"...Sorry. It just reminds me of home,"
Jax raised an eyebrow when he heard that.
"Sorry for what?"
"...Eating too much?"
This time both Jax and Serika stared at her.
Then Serika immediately stepped in.
"Princess," she said firmly, "You can eat five times more than this an no-one would care, don’t worry,"
Serika gestured dramatically toward the absurd amount of food still covering the table as she spoke, and the little Princess looked stunned.
"...Oh."
Jax smirked faintly, "Don’t worry about it."
That seemed to finally settle the last of her lingering nervousness. After that, Seraphina ate completely freely and eventually, after a long while, she finally slowed down.
The little Princess leaned back slightly in her chair with the expression of someone who had achieved spiritual enlightenment through breakfast.
"...Full..."
Jax glanced sideways at her.
"Yeah?"
She nodded slowly.
"Very."
Her earlier excitement had faded into a soft, sleepy satisfaction now. Jax could practically feel the difference in her mood compared to yesterday.
Yesterday while he was saving her, she had been terrified, traumatized after experiencing the cruel treatment from the Church who had captured her, and now, she was happy, and safe.
Seraphina turned toward him after a moment.
Then quietly—
"...Thank you."
Jax looked at her.
She fidgeted slightly beneath his gaze before continuing.
"For saving me."
A small pause.
"And for the food."
The sincerity in her voice made the entire massive dining hall feel oddly quiet for a moment.
Jax exhaled softly through his nose.
"...No problem."
Seraphina smiled faintly after hearing that. Then, her eyelids drooped slightly.
Jax immediately noticed.
"Tired?"
She tried shaking her head.
Failed immediately.
"...Maybe a little."
Serika stepped forward smoothly.
"Which is why," she said gently, "you should probably bathe and rest properly now."
Seraphina blinked slowly.
"...Bath?"
Serika smiled warmly.
"You’ve been through a lot."
The fox-woman’s fluffy tails swayed slightly behind her.
"A warm bath will help you relax."
The little Princess looked uncertain for a second before glancing toward Jax instinctively.
Jax noticed immediately.
"You should go."
That seemed to settle it.
"...Okay."
Serika bowed slightly afterward.
"I’ll take care of her, Your Majesty."
Jax nodded once.
"Thanks."
Serika smiled faintly.
"Of course."
She extended a hand gently toward Seraphina.
The little Princess hesitated briefly before climbing down from her chair, but before following Serika, she suddenly turned back toward Jax again and quickly asked.
"...You’ll still be here later?"
Jax blinked once and then answered immediately.
"Yeah."
Her shoulders visibly relaxed afterward.
"...Okay."
And finally, she followed Serika out of the dining hall.
Jax watched them leave for a few seconds. Serika’s calm elegance contrasted oddly well with Seraphina’s smaller, more uncertain movements.
Still, the little Princess looked considerably more comfortable already. Once the doors closed behind them, the atmosphere in the dining hall shifted again.
The quiet peace faded, and Jax’s expression sharpened slightly. Now, his calm morning relaxation was over, and now it was time for him to get to work.
His fingers tapped lightly once against the table before he stood.
"...Alright."
Space folded subtly around him and a moment later, Jax vanished from the dining hall entirely.
The administrative wing of the Demon King Palace was already fully active by the time he arrived. Mana interfaces floated through the air.
Messengers moved rapidly between divisions.
Strategic projections hovered above massive tables displaying troop movements, trade routes, magical resource outputs, and territorial updates.
At the center of it all, Sabrina stood surrounded by floating documents and glowing magical screens.
The succubus administrator barely looked up initially as she continued signing off on multiple reports simultaneously.
"Three eastern caravans rerouted successfully."
"Mana crystal output increased another twelve percent."
"Military reinforcement requests approved."
Her voice remained calm and perfectly composed despite the overwhelming amount of information surrounding her.
Only after finishing several commands did she finally glance upward.
"I’m glad you came."
Jax’s expression sharpened slightly.
"Problems?"
Sabrina’s golden eyes narrowed.
"...Several."
