Chapter 7: Unmasking Conan, Donning My Own Identity
The next day, after completing his daily training, Akutagawa took a bath and, full of energy, walked through the wall that had once again been breached, into Professor Agasa's yard.
As expected, Akutagawa Hiko saw Conan, who was almost fully recovered.
"Conan is here too. Professor, why didn't you mention to me that your relatives have such a cute child?"
Akutagawa ruffled Conan's hair, and the look of anger that Conan dared not express made the polite smile on Akutagawa's face seem more genuine.
"Haha, because they are distant relatives and we don't keep in touch much, I haven't mentioned them."
Professor Agasa scratched his signature bald patch and chuckled.
Conan's heart skipped a beat; he had a bad feeling.
Akutagawa's subsequent actions confirmed Conan's suspicions.
"Conan, you seem to know me. Have we met somewhere before?"
Conan has an excellent memory and remembered the name "Akutagawa" that he blurted out back then. At that time, he was so stunned by the beating that he couldn't remember his hidden identity at all.
In a moment of desperation, Conan came up with a less-than-ideal excuse: "Shinichi mentioned it, that's why I recognized Akutagawa."
As soon as he said it, Conan realized that his argument was untenable, but to his surprise, the other party did not seize on this flaw.
Seeing Conan's conflicted expression, Akutagawa Hiko almost couldn't help but burst out laughing.
He came here specifically to expose Conan's true identity so that he could logically fit into the plot later, and also to put on a disguise for himself.
Although Conan's previous actions and flaws were obvious, if he stubbornly refused to admit it, Akutagawa Hiko couldn't get solid evidence, but it wasn't impossible.
If you send out some information that Conan cares about most, you will naturally be included in his ranks.
Akutagawa didn't say much to Conan, but turned to Professor Agasa and asked, "Professor, do you know where Kudo went? I need his help."
Professor Agasa was about to recite the explanation he had discussed with Conan when Conan beat him to it: "Shinichi-nii is very busy lately. If Akutagawa-nii needs anything, Professor, you can pass it on, right, Professor?"
Professor Agasa touched his bald head and nodded repeatedly: "Yes, yes."
Akutagawa looked at Conan thoughtfully: "Professor, what are your thoughts on things like immortality and rejuvenation?"
Conan's mind went blank when he saw Akutagawa Hiko, who was also dressed entirely in black.
I hadn't noticed it before, firstly because I hadn't encountered the Black Organization yet, and secondly because although Akutagawa Hiko was also wearing black, it wasn't the same trench coat and suit as the two men in black.
Conan quickly dismissed his own guess.
If Akutagawa Hiko really was in cahoots with the men in black, how could he possibly be so kind as to save two strangers' children? His righteous indignation didn't seem like an act.
"Rejuvenation?"
Dr. Agasa stared in surprise.
"That's right. According to the information I've received, it's a drug named APTX4869. Although it's a cell apoptosis toxin, it's actually a byproduct of an elixir of life."
Akutagawa Hiko continued to stroke Conan's head: "This kid, isn't he actually part of a new couple?"
Conan anxiously looked up and quickly asked, "What else do you know? Since you know about this drug, you must also know where the antidote is, right?"
Akutagawa Hiko, who single-handedly subdued Conan, who was hopping around like a fish out of air, said regretfully, "I don't know much either. I only know that it's a huge multinational organization, so you can put away your naive ideas."
Such a large organization had many undercover agents planted inside, to the point that a perfectly good winery was portrayed as producing fake and watered-down wine in the story.
So much so that everyone is joking that if the undercover agent is brought back, the organization will almost collapse.
In reality, without conclusive evidence, even if someone is caught, it is difficult to convict them.
They prepared an escape route early on; even after shedding some tentacles, they can still make a comeback.
They still have the presence to back it up; otherwise, they could have just taken matters into their own hands and dealt with the situation directly. Why would they need so many undercover agents?
"But!"
"No buts!"
Akutagawa Hiko pressed down on Conan's shoulder, his expression serious: "Listen, Shinichi, this organization is far too dangerous. They've killed countless people and treat human life like dirt. Just relax and be a kid for now. If you gain anything from this, they definitely won't forget you."
After saying that, Akutagawa Hiko left without looking back.
Akutagawa Hiko's second purpose in coming here was to also put on a disguise for himself.
Directly revealing one's true identity to the other party is undoubtedly the lowest form of behavior.
Only by waiting for the other party to gradually find clues and finally see through the fog to reveal the true identity will one be more convinced that the disguise is the real face.
This way, the vest you wear is less likely to fall off.
Akutagawa Hiko didn't believe that Conan would actually give up the investigation because of the organization's danger, nor did he believe that Conan, with his curiosity, would be able to resist the urge to find out his identity.
Conan's expression shifted unpredictably. The usually clear face of his neighbor was now shrouded in mystery and enveloped in a fog.
Professor Agasa broke the silence first: "Shinichi, maybe we should just give up. A transnational criminal organization is not something you can handle alone."
If he gave up, Conan wouldn't be Shinichi Kudo.
"I could have let it go before I didn't know, but now that I do, how can I tolerate such an organization continuing to roam free?"
Conan's original goal was to obtain a poison sample from the Black Organization, have a tech guru create an antidote, and then report them as the famous detective Shinichi Kudo.
It now seems that reporting it is not an option.
The goal is to collect evidence of the organization's crimes and completely destroy it!
"But you're all alone, how can you fight against a transnational criminal organization?"
Dr. Agasa was very worried that his best friend's child, whom he had watched grow up, might accidentally lose his life.
"If it really is a transnational criminal organization, it's impossible for it not to have enemies. There's also the mysterious Akutagawa and the people behind him. My target is small and not easily noticed by the Black Organization. It might have a surprising effect."
Conan calmly analyzed the situation, showing no sign of losing his composure upon hearing about the man in black.
"And what about you, Professor Agasa? Since you can create the Butterfly Voice Changer, you can definitely create even more amazing gadgets!"
Professor Agasa waved his hands repeatedly: "I would never make weapons of mass destruction!"
Conan knew Dr. Agasa's bottom line, of course, and didn't expect him to produce such a thing; otherwise, the two of them would be no different from outlaws.
"No, I only need self-defense tools. My combat skills are too low right now, and I can't handle just anyone."
Thinking about this, the wounds on my body still throbbed faintly.
Professor Agasa breathed a sigh of relief and readily agreed...
