Chapter 127 The Mirror of Eris reveals the desires of the heart!
Hermione and Ron continued to wander around the castle, heading to secluded and deserted places—anywhere they would never normally go to class.
Neither of them had a very comfortable day on Thursday.
Ron summoned a bison in Charms class and was penalized with a paper; Hermione was restless in Flying class and forced herself to ride a flying broom, causing a terrifying mid-air incident.
So when Ron suddenly suggested that Hermione follow Dudley and Harry out for a night stroll, Hermione agreed without much hesitation; they all needed to clear their heads.
Ron is currently aimless and wants to give up, but he can't get over his mental block and can't completely give up.
Hermione tried her best to roll into the sky, but was disappointed to find that no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't beat Dudley who was on a winning streak. Even with Harry, she could only barely keep up. In some areas (such as riding a broomstick), she couldn't even come close.
"Ah~"
The two strolled along in silence, their thoughts churning, and one of them couldn't help but sigh quietly.
This situation only temporarily ended when a major, accidental discovery came to their attention.
Hermione casually used a lock-picking charm to open the door of an abandoned classroom and led Ron inside.
Their gazes swept past the familiar dilapidated tables and chairs, and the dusty wastepaper baskets, and suddenly they saw an unusually large mirror, which stood quietly against a wall in the abandoned classroom, completely out of place with its surroundings.
"Wow!"
Ron was captivated by the large mirror and couldn't help but exclaim, "Merlin's red hair dye! I've never seen such a magnificent, tall, and beautiful mirror! Look! Its top almost touches the ceiling!"
Hermione was just as surprised, and she and Ron quickly approached the unusual large mirror.
When they got closer, they could see by the moonlight that the mirror was not leaning against the wall, but had two supporting feet at the bottom. They couldn't tell what material it was, but it looked like some kind of metal painted with gold.
Hermione cast a glow-in-the-dark spell on her wand, and a small ball of white light appeared at the tip of the wand. When she looked closely at the mirror, she saw a long string of characters engraved on the top of the mirror frame.
"This looks like ancient runes! It's a course we can only take in our third year!"
Dudley's alchemy notes also mentioned that ancient wizards liked to inscribe these kinds of characters on their alchemical works, seemingly for some special purpose, such as stabilizing or enhancing the magical effects of alchemical items.
Hermione paid attention to the details around the mirror, consistently demonstrating her reputation as the 'Ms. Know-It-All'.
Although she can't yet decipher the meaning of this string of runes, it's already quite remarkable that she can recognize what ancient runes look like and know what functions they can serve in first grade.
Hermione's insightful words received no response from Ron.
Hermione looked to her side with some confusion and found Ron staring intently at the mirror with a silly grin on his face, completely ignoring what she was saying.
"Ron, what's wrong with you? What's so interesting about a mirror? It's just a reflection of yourself..."
Hermione couldn't understand Ron's behavior at this moment. She called out to Ron, but her eyes unconsciously turned to the mirror, and her words gradually stopped.
She didn't see her normal reflection in the mirror, but instead saw...
I noticed that her wizard robes were covered with the Order of Merlin's medals, including first, second, and third class medals.
All the professors, including Dumbledore, stood around praising her erudition and extolling her great power.
Even the arrogant Dursley teaching assistant was deeply impressed by her, bowing respectfully to her. His expression was no longer calm, but filled with surprise and admiration.
"Hahahaha!"
Hermione couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Awesome! That's so awesome!
That felt great! That felt so good!
However, the good time didn't last long, as Hermione's laughter woke her up.
She was momentarily distracted and instantly snapped out of that magical state of watching.
She then realized that what she had just seen was merely an illusion created by the mirror, and not real at all.
Hermione felt a sudden emptiness in her heart, but she had a strong will and resisted looking at the mirror again. Instead, she moved closer to Ron, grabbed his shoulders, and shook him, trying to wake him up.
"Hey! Hermione, stop messing around! I'm the student council president and captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team now. You have to respect me. It's not good if people see you doing this!"
Ron was clearly more engrossed in the illusions created by the Mirror of Erised than Hermione, and less willing to wake up.
When Hermione heard Ron's words, she was initially speechless, but then, thinking that she might have looked the same way just now, she blushed with embarrassment.
However, she quickly adjusted her mindset. Since no one saw it, she decided to pretend it never happened!
"Ron! Wake up! Time for your chicken leg!"
Hermione shook Ron harder and even used food as bait.
"What chicken leg?!"
Ron finally woke up.
He desperately wanted to prove his excellence to his family.
God knows how much psychological pressure it must have been for an eleven-year-old who felt he had only average talent to have five exceptionally talented older brothers.
This psychological pressure became even stronger after he gained two more outstanding friends and one friend who was ridiculously excellent.
That's why he got so deeply involved.
After all, the scene depicted in the Mirror of Erised was too tempting.
"No chicken drumsticks! You were just under the control of this magic mirror! Shaking you didn't even wake you up!"
Hermione, who was concerned about her image, naturally omitted the fact that she had also been captivated by the Mirror of Erised, and only mentioned Ron's reaction just now.
"Ah? Yes, yes, yes!"
Ron shook his dazed head, stopped, and tried to look at the mirror of the Mirror of Erised again, but Hermione, quick as a flash, turned his head back to him.
"Ouch—ouch, ouch, ouch!" Ron cried out in pain.
"It's supposed to hurt! Do you really want to be stuck in that fake illusion? It's not real!" Hermione said irritably.
"I wish it were true! Unfortunately, I can't!"
Ron realized Hermione was right, so he turned his gaze away from the Mirror of Erised and started saying discouraging things.
"It's just being the student council president and the Quidditch captain, isn't it? You haven't even tried, so what makes you think you can't do it?!"
Hermione, hearing Ron's discouraging words, seemed quite disappointed in him. She was speaking to Ron as well as to herself.
In Miss Know-It-All's dictionary, there is no such word as 'give up'. No matter how fake the image in the mirror was, one day she will make the fake real through her own efforts!
Hermione knew that without this courage and attitude, she would never become a true strong person in her life.
The image in the mirror will always be fake.
