Chapter 136 Rotten Fish by the River
No marriage is perfect and can be dissolved at any time.
However, according to the law of inequality, engagement is not the same as marriage. When Robert and Ed discussed it, they said they would wait a few years.
After all, divine intervention was watching from above, so Joffrey had his own plans for this matter.
He went to find his farming knight first.
The water outside the muddy gate was a murky yellowish-brown, and a gust of wind carried a faint fishy smell and the scent of river mud.
After months of dredging and reconstruction, the sunken ships in the Blackwater River have finally been cleaned up.
The docks at the port have also returned to their former bustling state.
Beggars and technicians wandered the muddy ground, while fisherwomen selling their catch banged on wooden buckets in front of them and shouted at the top of their lungs.
"Snails, clams, and pike—freshly caught! Come and see!"
Suddenly her eyes lit up, and she quickly opened another wooden bucket, took something out of it, and held it high above her head.
"Your Majesty! My husband just dug up some red crabs, would you like to try some?"
Joffrey smiled and nodded at her, but did not dismount.
"Go and buy it at market price," he said to Lancel beside him.
Young knights are generally not satisfied with servant-like tasks.
But Lancel had, after all, been Robert's squire.
Robert vented his frustrations with the Lannisters on him in various ways, so this level of annoyance was nothing compared to what he was doing.
Lancel dispatched two men in gold robes to the city, while Joffrey looked toward the city walls near the Mud Gate.
The trenches that had been dug have long been filled in, and the buildings in the fish market have sprung up from the soil again.
The canteen, warehouse, tavern, shop, and even brothels with cheap technicians.
It must be admitted that the residents of King's Landing have given full play to their initiative, and the reconstruction speed is several times or even dozens of times faster than that of Flea Nest.
If Stannis were to launch a surprise attack, these things would be ready-made ladders.
However, everyone felt that the war was over, and the sense of urgency they once felt was gone.
Since small stalls were beneficial to economic recovery, Joffrey let them be.
Lancel, on the other hand, vigorously promoted economic development over there.
As soon as he went to buy something, all the vendors surrounded him, desperately trying to stuff the things in their hands into his arms.
As for Joffrey...
Because of a guy named Hound who carries a big stick and arrests people every day, he's now acting like a shoo-in, and nobody dares to come near.
But Joffrey didn't ask him to help out; instead, he wanted to see if Lancel could handle the situation on his own.
He was the eldest son of Ser Kevan, Tywin's brother, and was often said to look remarkably like Jaime.
Joffrey doesn't seem like it.
Although both have the Lannister's signature blue eyes, Jaime's hair is sun-kissed and golden, like Joffrey's.
Lancel's is sandy brown.
However, since some people say this, we can't be too careful.
But this is a case of "giving a bad name to someone," and Joffrey can't exactly pull out a tube of laundry detergent and say he has weapons of mass destruction.
So they found various opportunities to get him away, such as when James went on campaign, they deliberately sent Lancel away instead.
But the best way is still to drive people far away.
Because Kevan had made contributions in defending Lannister Harbor, Tywin Lannister subtly hinted to Joffrey, while at Casterly Rock, to reward his brother's son.
Although there was no news of Lancel having any military achievements or victories, Joffrey still found a reason to have James knight him.
Joffrey then gave him a position in the Kingsguard camp, and this inspection trip conveniently took him along.
The silly boy was actually quite happy, thinking he had been given an important position.
However, Tywin's hints went far beyond that.
He wanted Joffrey to make a small sacrifice.
That meant expelling Jaime from the Kingsguard, while Tywin would arrange for him to marry Margaery.
"Uncle James would never agree to this; he values the white robe more than his own swordsmanship."
"I am willing to write off all the debts owed by the treasury to the Lannisters, Your Majesty."
Then what else is there for us to say?
He would have been happy to do it if all it took was a small gift generously given to the archbishop.
However, once the Royal Guards take their oath, regardless of their disability, they must serve for life, and there is no historical precedent for them being relieved of their duties.
It wouldn't be good for Joffrey's reputation either, so we can't force it.
Moreover, if he were to be dismissed directly, James would definitely hate him.
This matter needs to be handled gradually.
"Your Majesty." Lancel returned carrying a large pile of things, including the two golden robes he had brought with him.
"Cousin, does my uncle also know how to produce gold?" the little devil sneered. "Then my father can finally take a break."
Lancel, relying on his knighthood, acted recklessly and showed little respect for his dwarf cousin.
"I am serving His Majesty, you little devil." He raised his head high.
"And what you said was the most vicious joke ever made against my father and Lord Tywin."
"Perhaps." The little devil smiled slightly.
"Then please tell me, His Majesty asked you to buy crabs, but you brought back a whole bunch of fish instead."
"Is this using His Majesty's money or your own?"
Lancel was somewhat embarrassed.
But a few fish aren't worth much money, so he stiffened his neck.
"Of course it's mine. Everyone wants to offer His Majesty their best, how could I refuse their kindness?"
"You're very generous, cousin. But you have to understand, we didn't come out to buy fish this time." The little devil started to escalate the situation.
"If on the battlefield, His Majesty orders you to capture a castle, but others order you to help them burn down a few villages, would you still go along?"
Lancel blushed.
"I—I—" His sparkling blue eyes looked over.
Joffrey spoke up: "Alright, Uncle, let this poor child go."
"Since it's the residents' good intention, we should accept it. Let's distribute the items together tonight."
"Ser Lancel, Lord Tyrion is the Chancellor of the Exchequer. How can you address him by his nickname?"
Lancel's ears turned red too.
He bowed his head to the little devil's horse: "My lord, please forgive my recklessness just now."
"A child who admits their mistakes and corrects them is still a good child." The little devil rode contentedly toward the harbor.
He kept harping on this trivial matter, perhaps to mock Lancel's incompetence, or perhaps because he felt the young knight was too arrogant.
However, after spending so much time together, Joffrey knew that Tyrion was just naturally sarcastic and sharp-tongued.
They will never miss an opportunity to satirize or ridicule someone.
The paper mill was built on the south bank of the Blackwater River, and Joffrey and his crew had to take a ferry to get there.
After all, lime water and wood ash water are used in the production process, and after use, they are discharged directly into the river as wastewater.
Although everyone has drunk both wildfire and two-legged fish soup, this little bit won't make a difference.
