Chapter 519 The Laughing Night Owl Annihilates His Entire Family!
"Night Owl, we have intercepted all the nuclear missiles."
Lady Styx floated down to the ground, while beside her, the Despair Demon gently landed on the ground carrying the last nuclear bomb.
These Earth weapons are very powerful, but compared to the energy weapons of the War World or other races in the universe, they are quite cumbersome. Lady Styx and Despair Demon didn't need to exert much effort to deal with them.
"Night owl?"
Lady Styx pressed a button on the communicator: "Can you hear me?"
"Cough, cough, cough, of course you can."
The owl on the other end of the communication finally spoke, and Lady Styx heard him say in a strange tone she had never heard before: "I've run into a bit of a problem on my end."
"What's going on?" Despair Demon asked. "Don't tell me you still let Luther get away under these circumstances. And what's wrong with your voice?"
"Luther stabbed me, and the wound on my neck makes me—"
"Ha, fragile mortals." Lady Styx interrupted Night Owl, her disdain almost palpable, and she could no longer even maintain the respect she had been barely putting on.
Neither Night Owl nor Despair Demon wisely paid any attention to this little incident. Night Owl continued, "But Luther escaped? No, of course not. That's another matter."
"Luthor's nuclear bomb is just a smokescreen, a way to buy time. Activating the nuclear bomb will also activate the backup plans he left in all the propulsion towers he's worked on, which will cause problems in the propulsion process of our universe."
"How many problems could there be?" Despair Demon said. "Your wisdom is commendable, Night Owl. Luther simply doesn't have the ability to leave a backdoor under your nose that could endanger our universe. Didn't you tell us that?"
The Despair Demon did not intend to be aggressive. Although he was also the ruler of a terrifying empire, his character was far more insidious and cunning than that of the Lady of the Styx.
Of all the people, he always presented himself as harmless, even playing a role in smoothing the relationship between Night Owl and those allies of the cosmic overlords.
This will be a good help for him in replacing Night Owl in the future. Therefore, maintaining a good relationship with Night Owl... at least until they completely turn against each other, is still very useful for him.
His question was met with a moment of silence from Night Owl: "Luthor didn't manage to do it, but someone else did."
"Who?"
Batman.
Lady Styx and the Despair Demon looked at each other in bewilderment.
"Just tell me what the situation is," Lady Styx interrupted him impatiently. "I don't have time to listen to your nonsense."
"Luther's dirty tricks will prevent our thrust towers from connecting to the Heart of the Planet."
"This would have devastating consequences, preventing our universe from accelerating," Night Owl said.
"What did you say?"
This was as if Lady Styx and the Despair Demon understood: "So, we can't lead the entire universe to escape anymore?"
"I'm afraid so. Batman has a backup plan with Luthor; he's sabotaged the magical circuitry of every power tower. Let's get to the meeting. I've gathered all our allies. It's the same place we always meet, but this time it's not a teleconference... everyone's real bodies will be there."
Night Owl hung up the communication, and Lady Styx and Despair Demon exchanged a glance, both seeing the anxiety in each other's eyes.
Even the Despair Demons couldn't keep up the act of being nice anymore. They were strong, stronger than most beings in their universe, and that's because the stronger they were, the more they understood just how terrifying the Anti-Monitor was and how foolish it was to fight him.
They had assumed they could have a leisurely discussion and continue to lord it over the new world. But the unexpected turn of events now threatened their lives, which was previously considered secure. How could this not throw them into disarray?
As the portal opened, it only took a few seconds for the Despair Demon and the Lady of the Styx to appear together in the hall, which was now almost entirely filled with people.
The Soul Eater crouched in the corner, while the Galactic Golem dispatched a clone formed from its own energy. Starro also sent his own clone, the starfish, to the meeting.
Meanwhile, Night Owl sat silently in the head seat of the conference room, his expression serious.
"Night Owl, you told me we could escape," the Despair Demon demanded in a low voice, barely containing his rage. "You must provide an explanation!"
"Yes, I told you that, but the situation has changed."
The Despair Demon's questioning provoked a fearless response from the Night Owl. Although the Despair Demon could easily tear the Night Owl to shreds with a single hand, the Night Owl acted as if he were the one capable of instantly killing him.
"I only told you that we have a high probability of escaping, but we can't rule out the possibility of failure."
In exchange, you will have to provide the power you possess to help us overcome this difficult time.
But this explanation clearly failed to convince everyone present. They were a group of tyrants and villains, and their patience was running out. Night Owl stopped beating around the bush and spoke:
"So now I need you to actively connect to the entire universe's magic network and use your own power to guide the power of the planetary stars into the propulsion tower, in order to replace the original magic loop effect."
"This means we would become conductors of energy, which is dangerous for us."
"A conductor of a small portion of energy. I will first manipulate the Heart of the Planet to release a small amount of energy, then let it pass through your body. Once it is connected to the propulsion tower, I will gradually increase the power, at which point you can leave."
Lady Styx heard Night Owl say, "This is the only way, and it's one of the backup plans I prepared in case the booster tower is damaged. We can only talk about anything else after we've secured our survival."
"This is dangerous for us," the avatar of the Galactic Puppet said slowly. Although it could be irritable and easily angered at times, it was surprisingly calm on these issues. It hadn't said a word since then, just coldly watching Night Owl and Despair Demon talk.
"Yes, you are indeed in danger. You will be very weak while bearing these energies, and most of your power will be used to envelop the magic that guides the heart of the planet."
"But what dangers will you encounter on my planet, in my world?"
Night Owl said, "Luthor has been captured. There is no force in the entire universe that can threaten us anymore."
A hush fell over the scene. Everyone fell silent. The Despair Demon tried to use his telepathy to probe the other person's thoughts.
Although he had confirmed the other party was a robot the previous times he did this, he still made it a habit.
There was no response; he couldn't enter the other's mind. The Despair Demon knew the other was using a mental blocker. No matter how many times he experienced it, this feeling was extremely unsettling for the Despair Demon, who was used to detecting the other's thoughts to decide his next move.
This habit, however, hampered his decision-making ability, preventing him, the "greatest common denominator" in the cosmic overlord group, from speaking up immediately.
By the time he came to his senses, the entire conversation was once again being led by Night Owl.
"If the anti-monitors find out I'm trying to escape, I'll be the first to die, along with my beloved universe and my Gotham City."
"I will do everything in my power to protect you. If you fail, this universe will become food for the Anti-Monitors, and both you and I will die at their hands. I don't understand what you have to think about. Aren't we all gathered here to survive?"
"Alright." Before Despair Demon could think of what to say, he heard Lady Styx's voice in his ear. She agreed with Night Owl's words, and the other cosmic overlords followed suit one after another.
Despair Demon vaguely sensed that this plan was dangerous; they were directly exposed to Night Owl. But then he thought, Night Owl wouldn't risk his universe and his life like that.
What am I afraid of?
Thinking about it that way, it didn't seem like there was any real reason. So the brief meeting quickly adjourned, and everyone was tasked with hanging themselves on the push towers. Soon, they were all on their own towers, hanging themselves up one by one...
Like pigs that have hung themselves on meat hooks, even as the iron hooks pierce their buttocks and draw blood, they hypnotize themselves into believing it is a necessary sacrifice.
Despair Demon examined his push tower and indeed found traces of tampering by Luther. Although he did not understand the structure of the push tower, he could recall through his telepathic abilities that Luther had been working in this section.
After Despair Demon confirmed Night Owl's statement at the scene, the last trace of doubt in his heart disappeared.
So he conscientiously hanged himself from a tree branch in the southeast, and then asked the owl:
"Is it already starting up, Night Owl?"
The method the owl described worked.
He began to feel a trickle flowing through his body into the propulsion tower; at first it was just a trickle, but now it was gradually increasing in size.
"Are you done, Night Owl?" he asked. He felt a slight, stinging pain, but the flowing energy was within his tolerance.
"Wait a little longer. I need to wait a little longer before I can fully introduce that magic into the Propulsion Tower." He heard Night Owl reply in the communicator, "I'm simultaneously introducing the energy contribution from each of you, and then manipulating the Heart of the Planet."
"You have to hold on for a while."
The cosmic overlords in the channel chattered amongst themselves for a while, but ultimately believed what Night Owl said. However, a short time later, Despair Demon sensed that something was amiss.
"This is truly unbelievable."
He gritted his teeth: "Are you kidding me? There's more energy being transferred, and even more?"
He gritted his teeth: "Night Owl, didn't you say it was an experiment? What kind of experiment would require an energy infusion exceeding that of a celestial body?"
"That's a bit too much, isn't it ready yet, Night Owl?" The deep voice of the Galactic Puppet sounded in the communication channel.
"I want to know exactly when this infusion will end. It's proving too much for us."
"Night owl?"
There was no one speaking on the communication channel. Just as Despair Demon was beginning to have doubts, he heard Night Owl's strange sound, as if something was trying to burst out of his throat and howl, but he desperately pressed it back down.
"I'm sorry, I was too badly injured to show it to you."
"What exactly is going on?"
"It's very difficult to move around now. Guiding those magical energies is too hard for me. I'm sorry, but I need everyone to hold on a little longer."
"What's wrong with you??? Can you give me a specific time?"
The Galactic Puppet began to become agitated, and then Night Owl said, "I'm sorry, but after the New World, I will allocate an extra hundred sectors from my own share as compensation for everyone."
Night Owl's generosity surprised all the cosmic overlords. "He who takes a man's gift is bound to do so," they said, and everyone fell silent, except for the Despair Demon, who had a vague feeling that something was amiss.
"What exactly is your injury? Why does your voice sound like that?"
"I'm sorry, I've been procrastinating, but I can't escape reality. When I killed Nightwing, I contracted a new type of nanovirus I'd never seen before, created by Batman."
"That virus is present in all the cells of Nightwing's body, but it can only be generated by mixing with the blood of the Dire Wolves."
"This toxin is more potent than any toxin Batman has ever possessed or used against me. It's harmless when trapped within mutated cells, unless..."
"Unless he's dead," said Lady Styx.
"Yes, Styx, once the cells die, the toxins are released, and the dose is roughly enough to infect only one person."
"Night Owl..."
"The toxin took control of me in just... at least twenty minutes. It reorganized my brain, making it more like... the Joker's... If things had gone according to plan, I would have been able to retain the same level of rational thinking as before, but my moral core would have been replaced by something far more insane."
"The Joker's last wish was that whoever could kill him could become him."
"Wait, why didn't you tell us this during the previous meeting?"
"No, I wish I could be more certain. But I've just confirmed my doubts."
The ominous premonition grew stronger, and suddenly a bolt of lightning struck the Demon of Despair between the eyebrows: "It's you!"
Hahahahahaha!
A chilling laugh, accompanied by the trembling of the Despair Demon, rang out in the communication channel. In the next instant, all the cosmic overlords suddenly felt the magical energy flowing through their bodies transform into a gluttonous beast that was about to drain them dry in an instant.
A series of violent screams immediately rang out on the communication channel.
"No!!!!"
"Aaaaaaaahhhhh!"
"Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!"
