Chapter 100 Omens in the Dark
These skillful and trusting words further confirmed Batman's suspicions, prompting him to ask a question.
"What do we mean to you?"
It wasn't about foreseeing the future, nor was it about time travel. Batman had considered all of these things that Jung Eun mentioned, but quickly dismissed them.
Predicting the future usually yields vague directions; even if you can clearly see some fragments, no one can be certain that everything will proceed as before. Traveling through time and space also cannot explain the other person's familiar yet unfamiliar attitude.
Batman observed Jung Eun for a long time and realized that Jung Eun was also observing the world.
He was unfamiliar with this place.
This unfamiliarity can be explained as a foreigner's initial discomfort upon arriving in Gotham, but the other party is also a bit too accustomed to him, to people and things like Scarecrow, not the feeling of "here we go again" that comes from personal experience, but rather the feeling of "I knew this would happen" that was expected.
Batman wasn't sure if he was wrong about Jung Eun, but he did sense a sense of detachment from her, as if she were observing the outside world through a pane of glass.
This feeling was especially clear when we first met, but it has lessened considerably over time, as if the other person is gradually adapting to this familiar yet unfamiliar world.
He knew exactly what was going to happen here, and he knew exactly who was going to appear, just like turning the page of a storybook and moving on to the next chapter.
"What role did I play in the story you saw?"
Batman posed two questions in quick succession, displaying an attitude identical to that of the Batman universe.
Jung Eun didn't answer the first question. He looked intently at Batman and said, "He's a hero."
No further words are needed; the word "hero" suffices to describe him.
Batman paused for a moment before saying softly, "Is that so?"
"Of course."
Seeing his expression, Zheng Ensheng was afraid that he wouldn't believe her, and wanted to talk to him at length about his contributions to Gotham and what he and the Justice League had done.
To be honest, Gotham, which was supported by Batman and Wayne Enterprises in the comics, was in much better condition than the America he was in before he traveled there.
But Batman didn't elaborate on the issue. After getting the information he wanted, he turned the conversation back to the Court of Owls.
"I investigated this organization," he recalled. "Weeks after my parents were murdered, I vowed to find the real killer."
He was just a child then, and he was constantly immersed in the pain and sorrow of losing his loved ones.
The killer was quickly arrested by the Gotham City Police Department, but the deaths of his parents were an unchangeable reality.
Bruce refused to believe that it was all just a coincidence.
Joe Zier, who fired the shot, was just an ordinary person, and his reason for shooting was simply for some spare change and the pearl necklace around his neck.
This was too absurd for Bruce.
Suddenly, casually, everything was purely accidental.
Bruce didn't believe it.
"I believe there must be something huge lurking behind the scenes, orchestrating all of this." Batman laid bare his past thoughts, "The kids of Gotham have all heard some of the songs about the Court of Owls."
"A few days before my parents were murdered, a bird's nest appeared in the attic of our house, an owl's nest."
Young Bruce saw this as an omen, a warning.
"At that time, I swore revenge."
Although he was young at the time, he was already prepared to fight the Court of Owls. He wanted revenge, he wanted destruction, and he wanted the Court of Owls to feel the same pain they had caused him.
"Then began various investigations into the Court of Owls."
No matter how young he was, he was still the heir to the Wayne Enterprises, and the authority and power he wielded were beyond the reach of ordinary people. He quickly gathered information on the most powerful families in all of Gotham, and he even located a building—an abandoned social club.
"I found the harbor mansion, with two owls as its crest. All the families I suspected had joined this club."
Batman spoke quietly, "I'm absolutely certain, this is it. I've found the Court of Owls, the hideout of the villains who killed my parents."
Fragments of comics he had once read flashed through Jung Eun's mind, and he couldn't help but continue, "But you didn't find anything."
Young Bruce found nothing, no answers, no villains; all he saw was dust and an old, dilapidated room that hadn't been used for years.
"Yes, that's when I realized that you can never let your emotions cloud your judgment when handling cases," Batman said frankly. "I thought the Court of Owls was just a legend, but then the claws appeared."
He did come to investigate because the locator showed that Jung Eun had been staying near the circus for a long time.
The circus was located in the suburbs. He passed by the area during his night patrol and found Jung Eun by following the directions shown on the locator.
At that moment, Zheng Enzheng was squatting on a tree branch, watching the circus performers from afar. He got tired of watching and wanted to take a break and watch some videos. He was just about to take his phone out of his pocket when suddenly the ground next to him sank.
Turning his head, he saw an enormous, pitch-black moth gracefully landing beside him. However, no matter how light it was, its weight was still real, and as soon as Batman landed, the tree branch sank a little.
Zheng En couldn't help but worry, "Could you please use a different tree branch to squat on? I'm afraid it will break."
Batman didn't reply, only repeatedly asking, "What are you doing here?"
"Do good deeds."
Zheng En answered with righteous indignation, and secretly opened the gacha pool, giving herself a ten-pull.
He knew he had Batman's tracking device on him, and his squatting there was also a way of trying to lure Batman out.
Although the cause of the Graysons' deaths is unclear, there's strength in numbers, and Batman is a free agent, so why not take advantage of it?
Zheng En wasn't sure if Batman would come, but since he did, and things were going the way he wanted, it meant he was lucky today.
Since I feel good about myself, drawing cards is naturally a must.
The fountain in the panel charged up and erupted, bursting with a white light as several cards were sprayed out of the pool with the water.
Amidst a pile of discarded white cards, a brilliant purple light shone brightly.
Portable Friend or Foe Navigation Device
Still worried about not being able to distinguish friend from foe or find red-named characters during fights? Our portable friend/foe identification navigator is here to serve you!
[Details: Items inspired by game settings. Who says real life can't be played like a game? Earth Online]
There are plenty of random NPCs with red, green, and yellow names.
A portable GPS navigator disguised as ordinary glasses. Once worn, it can identify and locate various individuals within a five-kilometer radius based on the wearer's customized settings.
Another pair of glasses —
Jung Eun remained silent for a moment. Although he knew it was normal for such vision-related props to appear in the form of glasses, he already had many glasses.
He could only console himself that he had drawn enough fusion modification attempts, and that he could combine the [Audiovisual Enhancement Device] and the [Penetrating Telescope]...
After the integration, Zheng En also incorporated the [Portable Friend or Foe Navigation Device].
The main selling point is the ability to get by using only a monocle.
All of the above operations were performed in front of Batman. Taking advantage of the fact that the other man couldn't see, he was able to operate the panel directly with his mind after mastering it, saving him the trouble of clicking with his fingers.
Zheng En was worried that if there was a sudden attack by an assassin or something, he might not be able to catch up even with a bamboo dragonfly.
But once the monocle has the function of a friend-or-foe navigation system, all of these issues become much easier to resolve.
After the items were fully integrated, Zheng En immediately activated the enemy-or-foe navigation function.
There's a green dot on the side, a bunch of yellow dots in the circus, and the small green dot is clearly Dick. Zooming the map out to its smallest size, several red dots suddenly appear, rushing from the edge of the map towards the circus.
"Holy shit!"
Zheng En cursed, ripped off a corner of his Batman cape, and ran. "Something, who knows if it's an assassin, is charging at us! We have to stop them, or everyone here will die!"
Batman immediately followed.
Zheng Engang recognized the red dots immediately upon seeing them. "Damn, they're the claws of the Court of Owls!"
The owls are all easily recognizable by their attire. Although the clothing of different owls may vary, you can more or less see the image of an owl or a bird.
Zheng En and Batman stopped the group of claws; there were four in total, and they each took on two. Taking advantage of the close-quarters combat, Zheng En quickly dispatched two of them with Crazy Diamond.
Even if the claws have a strong regenerative ability, they can rearrange the damaged tissues and organs, but the misaligned body cannot be repaired.
He caught the Claws off guard, but they weren't stupid. After the same thing happened twice, they realized they had to distance themselves from Zheng En.
The Claws' goal was clear: to head straight for the circus.
Even with Batman's help, Jung Eun still managed to let one of them slip through.
In desperation, Zheng En had no choice but to buy a freeze gun from the system store and give it to Batman before chasing after him.
"These claws are immortal; low temperatures can inhibit their cellular activity."
[Freeze Gun]
[A gun of true kindness, a technology born to save lives; even if it has other uses, it will not directly cause death.]
[Details: This technology was created by Mr. Freezing to save his wife's wish. His original intention was to use cryogenics to revive his terminally ill wife in a future with advanced medicine. However, due to funding issues, it ended up being used for something else.]
A person frozen in place has their vital functions forcibly suspended, but can return to normal after proper thawing.
If it weren't for today's event, Jung Eun wouldn't have bought any items related to the character.
Having completed so many missions, he had a rough idea of how the mission rewards were determined. For example, the Ventriloquist mission would grant the skill "Ventriloquism," while the Killer Crocodile mission would grant a strong physique.
These mission rewards are given based on the characteristics of the mission target. If he later accepts a mission related to Mr. Freeze, the mission reward he receives is likely to be the Freeze Gun.
Jung Eun doesn't need to buy things she can get for free, but unfortunately there are always exceptions.
Zheng Enlian didn't even have time to sigh before she had to chase after him, but she was still a step too late.
When they arrived inside the caravan, Mrs. Grayson had already been murdered.
Jung Eun could only be thankful that the skill card she bought was Crazy Diamond.
There's not much to say about what happened next. When he led the circus owner back, Batman had already dealt with the remaining claws.
The two obtained some clues from the circus owner and confessed some things to each other, but the problem returned to square one.
Why did the Owl Court do this?
"Is there anything special about this circus?"
Batman tried to get more information from Zheng En. Since the secret had already been revealed, Zheng En didn't mind saying a little more. "If I had to say something, it would only be about Dick."
"According to the original story, the Graysons would die on the spot during the performance, and you would adopt their only son, Richard Grayson, who is the boy we met today."
Zheng En briefly explained what he knew: "Their deaths weren't accidents. Gangsters sneaked backstage and tampered with the props. Dick wanted revenge, and you knew you couldn't stop him, so you helped him train and, as Batman, led him to bring mob boss Tony Zuko to justice."
Batman frowned. "He's just a child."
"Yes, but he's a gifted kid, and you were just a kid when you investigated the Court of Owls."
Zheng En knew that talking about many things was useless. It was difficult for people to empathize with their past selves. Even Batman couldn't understand Batman's actions. "Anyway, Dick has become your partner. Batman and Robin are debuting as a team."
He decided to put aside what had happened for now, Batman's mind preoccupied with the owl, muttering to himself, "But what does that have to do with Claws attacking the circus?"
"This is of no benefit to the Court of Owls —"
Jung Eun: You're using all my lines!
Batman stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Does that mean there might be someone else controlling Claws?"
Jung Eun: Hmm—this isn't my lyrics anymore.
"If Claws aren't controlled by the Owl Court, then who is?" Jung Eun didn't understand.
Regardless of the setting, the Claws are an assassin organization under the Court of Owls. Even if there is infighting at the top, such as Lincoln March killing a group of court personnel, or Sebastian and Calvin assassinating the new leader of the Court, Catherine Monroe, those who control the Claws still belong to the Court.
